Sprouting Out

KathyAnne White from They Remain

This is the 6th piece of my They Remain Series honoring the Granite Mountain Hotshots of Prescott.

Sprouting Out

22″ height x 36″ length x 24″ width
materials include 14 gauge steel, heated, formed, mig welded, assorted gauge wire,
Gilders Paste, digital print on metal mesh, digital image transfers, bicycle chain parts, beads.

Metal intrigues me as I start a new piece. Steel just flat, dark, heavy (if it’s in a large piece) and isn’t a soft inviting material. Starting out is the usual set up of torches for cutting, forming and welding. I don’t work with a plasma cutter because the jagged edges that drip and get funky from cutting with an oxyacetylene torch are what I like. For “Sprouting Out” my thoughts were to pull this metal out of the flat ground with movement and not much height. Moment by moment I used my cut pieces, tweaked them, welded them and at the end added my 3D elements.
